Musashimaru chases the rope at May (Natsu) 1999

May (Natsu) 1999 opens on May 9. After going 8-7 two basho ago, ozeki Musashimaru took the last one at 13-2. The standard is "back-to-back championships, or the equivalent" — stay at the front of the race here, and the rope becomes real.

Banzuke Notes

Last basho, Takanohana withdrew at 8-3-4 and Wakanohana withdrew at 5-5-5 and Akebono sat out the entire tournament — neither yokozuna finished the tournament. Whether both can return from day one and restore the dignity of the rank is the defining question of this basho.

Ozeki Takanonami went a strong 12-3 last basho and belongs in the title conversation.

In the sanyaku ranks, Takatoriki moves up to Komusubi after going 8-7 at Maegashira 1.

Rope Run & Kadoban

After going 8-7 two basho ago, ozeki Musashimaru took the last one at 13-2. The standard is "back-to-back championships, or the equivalent" — stay at the front of the race here, and the rope becomes real. Fifteen days begin in which he can hardly afford a single loss.

Meanwhile, ozeki Chiyotaikai, after finishing 3-8-4 last basho, enters this one kadoban. It is his first kadoban since reaching the rank. The numbers add to the worry: his rating of 2340 sits 249 points below his peak of 2589, just No. 8 in makuuchi — thin for an ozeki. Can he summon the rank's pride anyway?

New Faces in Makuuchi

Making their makuuchi debut: Yotsukasa.

Returning to makuuchi: Daizen, Kyokutenho.

Title Contenders (Rating)

Musashimaru tops the pre-basho ELO chart at 2466. On the numbers, these five headline the title race.

解説 ・ InsightMusashimaru has climbed from a rating of 2365 to 2466 over the past year — the momentum is real.

One caveat: Akebono is returning from a layoff — whether the numbers hold is an open question.
