Both yokozuna return — with the rank's dignity at stake

January (Hatsu) 2019 opens on January 13. Last basho, Kisenosato withdrew at 0-5-10 and Hakuho sat out the entire tournament and Kakuryu sat out the entire tournament — neither yokozuna finished the tournament. Whether both can return from day one and restore the dignity of the rank is the defining question of this basho.

Banzuke Notes

Ozeki Takayasu went a strong 12-3 last basho and belongs in the title conversation. Ozeki Goeido withdrew at 8-4-3 last basho — lasting the full fifteen days comes first. Ozeki Tochinoshin went 8-7 last basho and looks to build on it.

In the sanyaku ranks, Tamawashi moves up to Sekiwake after going 9-6 at Maegashira 2; Myogiryu moves up to Komusubi after going 8-7 at Maegashira 1.

Ozeki Bid

And then there is Takakeisho, who won the championship at 13-2 from Komusubi. Now at Sekiwake, another double-digit basho would put an ozeki run firmly on the table.

New Faces in Makuuchi

Making their makuuchi debut: Yago.

Returning to makuuchi: Kotoyuki, Kotoeko.

Title Contenders (Rating)

Hakuho tops the pre-basho ELO chart at 2813. On the numbers, these five headline the title race.

解説 ・ InsightA 155-point gap to second place — the data points to Hakuho alone.

One caveat: Hakuho, Kakuryu are returning from a layoff — whether the numbers hold is an open question.
